Lidl’s Milbona High Protein Kefir Review

As a fitness professional with 15 years of experience in the industry, I’m always on the lookout for high-protein products that fit seamlessly into a healthy lifestyle.

Kefir, a fermented milk drink packed with probiotics, has been part of my diet for years, mostly for its gut health benefits but also for its creamy texture and refreshing taste.

Without going into too much detail, I like to stay regular, especially as I push my late-thirties.

When I stumbled across Milbona High Protein Kefir in Lidl for just 99p, I couldn’t resist giving it a go.

It’s a promotional product so I’m not sure you’ll see it on the regular, but you may see it popping up from time to time and wonder if you should give it a whirl.

With 23g of protein per bottle, it claims to pack more of a punch than many other kefir brands.

But how does it compare to established kefir brands like those from Biotiful, Yeo Valley and Arla (or should we say Fartla? – Less on that one, the better).

Let’s find out.

Initial Thoughts: What Stood Out About Milbona Kefir?

When I first picked up a bottle of Milbona High Protein Kefir, the price was what stood out the most.

At 99p, it’s significantly cheaper than the usual kefir brands I buy from Asda which can be £2 and up for 500ml.

The packaging is simple yet bold, emphasising its high-protein content and natural ingredients, key selling points for anyone serious about nutrition and something that’s likely to make you gravitate towards these.

However, as someone who’s tried a variety of kefirs over the years, I noticed a few differences straight away.

The bottle is smaller than most, offering 350ml compared to the 500ml standard of other brands. While this could be seen as a downside, it’s also a more convenient portion size if you’re on the go.

I, however like to drink small glasses of this stuff over a few days so a bigger bottle than Lidl’s Milbonia Kefir provides is better for me personally.

Price: Is Milbona Kefir good value?

Let’s talk value for money.

At 99p, Milbona High Protein Kefir is incredibly affordable.

Most other kefir brands retail between £1.50 and £2.50 for a 500ml bottle, so even though Milbona’s bottle is smaller, it still offers great value for its size.

For those of us who consume kefir regularly, the cost can add up quickly, so finding an affordable option like this is a big win.

Much to my surprise I saved 15% because I bought four bottles which worked out at 84p each. A nice little bonus that I wasn’t aware of because of their “15% off Milbona Protein” promotion.

Of course, price isn’t everything, taste, texture, and nutritional content matter too.

But in a world where protein-rich snacks often come at a premium, Milbona’s kefir stands out as an accessible choice for budget-conscious shoppers.

Something which surprised me is the protein content. While my usual go-to Kefir drink from Yeo Valley claims to contains 4g of protein per 100g, Lidl’s Milbona Kefir claims to contains 7g of protein per 100g.

While I drink Kefir more for the gut benefits and less for the protein content, it’s a handy bonus if you’re trying to get your protein in.

It’s also worth noting that Lidl’s Milbona Kefir isn’t organic, while a product like Yeo Valley is, so it’s another consideration if organic is a requirement for you.

Taste: How Does Milbona Compare to the Big Brands?

Taste is where things get a bit subjective. Milbona’s kefir is noticeably more sour than the premium brands I usually buy.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially if you prefer a tangy, traditional kefir.

However, it’s worth knowing that the texture is thinner than most brands, which might not appeal to those who enjoy a thicker, creamier consistency.

For me, the tanginess was fine, I’ve had much sourer kefirs in the past, but the thinner texture took some getting used to. It’s a bit like the difference between a smoothie and a juice; both have their place, but it depends on what you’re in the mood for.

I decided not to try the other flavours in the Milbona range as they contain sweeteners and other ingredients I prefer to avoid.

While these additions might appeal to those with a sweeter tooth, I like to keep things as natural as possible, especially when it comes to kefir.

Protein Content/Macros: Is Milbona the High-Protein Hero It Claims to Be?

This is where Milbona High Protein Kefir really shines. With 23g of protein per 350ml bottle, it beats many other kefir brands in the protein stakes.

As someone who tracks their macros religiously, this is a massive selling point.

Protein is vital for muscle repair, recovery, and satiety, and getting it from a natural source like kefir is always a bonus.

In terms of overall macros, the drink is low-fat and the ‘original’ flavourless variety I tried contains no added sugar, another tick in the box for anyone following a fitness-focused diet.

It’s refreshing to see a product that delivers on its promises without sneaking in unnecessary additives.

Whether you’re using it as a post-workout recovery drink or as part of a balanced breakfast, it’s a versatile option.

Summary: Should You Give Milbona High Protein Kefir a Try?

A selection of high protein products on the shelves of Lidl

Milbona High Protein Kefir is a solid contender in the world of protein-packed drinks.

While it doesn’t quite match the premium brands in terms of taste and texture, its affordability and impressive protein content more than make up for it.

At just 99p, it’s an easy way to incorporate more probiotics and protein into your diet without breaking the bank.

As someone who’s spent well over a decade in the fitness industry, I’m always critical of products that over promise and under deliver.

Lidl’s Milbona, however, delivers exactly what it claims: a natural, high-protein kefir that’s accessible to everyone.

If you’re a regular kefir drinker or just looking to try something new, I’d say it’s definitely worth a go.

Would I buy it again?

Absolutely! The only drawback I see here is I expect it to be a promotion only product from Lidl that you’ll see randomly but won’t see on a daily basis.

If it comes in stock as a permanent product I’ll probably make it my go-to Kefir based purely on price. While the taste and thickness isn’t perfect, the price would make me overlook these minors.

It’s a great option for busy days when you need something quick, nutritious, and satisfying.

So, next time you’re in Lidl, grab a bottle and see what you think. Who knows? It might just become your new Kefir.

Have you tried it? I would love to hear what you think so drop me a comment below.
